Contactless Payment Surcharges Reshaping POS Orders for 2027

Surcharge rules on contactless card payments are tightening across the EU, UK and US. Here is what that means for POS hardware buyers placing orders in 2027.

Across the EU, the UK and a growing list of US states, regulators are tightening the rules around card payment surcharges. For retailers, this is not just a finance-team conversation — it is quietly changing the hardware specification of the next POS order. Distributors and chain buyers who place 2027 orders now need to understand why "NFC-ready" is no longer a checkbox feature, but a baseline requirement.

What is actually changing

Since 2021, card surcharges have been capped at the actual cost of processing in the UK, the EU Single Euro Payments Area and several US states including California, Colorado and Connecticut. The latest wave of updates goes further: several European markets now require merchants to clearly display the surcharge amount before the customer confirms payment, and a number of chains have responded by absorbing the fee and pushing the cost back onto hardware and checkout efficiency.

The practical effect is that retailers are re-examining every terminal that touches a contactless card. Older devices with slow NFC antenna tuning, or readers that sit behind thick plastic bezels, are now seen as a revenue leak — every declined or retry tap adds seconds at the counter and pushes customers back to cash, which carries its own handling cost.

Why hardware matters more than software here

Most surcharge rules are enforced at the payment-gateway level, but the customer experience is decided at the terminal. A well-tuned NFC antenna reads a card within 300 to 500 milliseconds; a poorly shielded reader can double that. For a checkout handling 200 to 400 transactions an hour, the difference compounds. Hardware buyers are therefore starting to ask suppliers three questions before placing a repeat order:

  • Is the terminal certified against the latest EMVCo contactless specifications used in your target markets?
  • Does the housing material shield the NFC antenna, or does it help it?
  • Can the same device survive a kitchen forecourt, a fuel kiosk or a seasonal pop-up — not just a clean in-door counter?

Why ruggedized terminals are winning new orders

One trend we see on the ODM side is that buyers who previously specified a basic plastic-cased POS for retail are now switching to an aluminum-alloy, partially sealed terminal. The reasons are not marketing — they are operational. An aluminum housing provides better structural rigidity, consistent thermal behavior and, importantly, a controlled Faraday environment that helps the NFC antenna perform predictably regardless of what the cashier places near the reader.

A good example is our 15-inch portable dustproof waterproof POS terminal (TX-A1506). Built around an aluminum-alloy chassis with a sealed front bezel, it is designed for environments where a basic desktop POS would fail within weeks: outdoor garden centers, mobile food counters, seasonal pop-up kiosks and factory shops. Because the contactless module sits behind a controlled, thin-glass interface rather than a thick, irregular plastic cover, tap transactions read faster and more consistently.

What distributors should do before the next RFQ

If you are quoting a chain customer for 2027 rollout, do not wait for them to ask. Proactively offer two tiers: a standard indoor terminal for dry retail counters, and a sealed aluminum terminal for any location that sees grease, dust, temperature swings or outdoor exposure. Make sure the contactless module is specifiable as a factory-integrated option rather than a last-minute aftermarket dongle — that is where reliability problems usually enter.

Surcharge rules will continue to tighten, and the retailers who win the next two years are the ones whose hardware stops becoming the bottleneck. If your next POS order still treats NFC as an optional add-on, it is already one cycle behind.
